St. Georges, October 10th,
2008:
The
Opposition is very concerned about the
excessive travel by the Prime Minister,
other Ministers, and the large
delegations that often travel with them.
The
Opposition calls on the government to
rationalize the excessive travel of
Ministers to the people. The Opposition
also calls for an explanation of the
strategic purpose and the results of the
government’s excessive travel. The
people have a right to know what
tangible benefits have been achieved for
the people when money is being spent on
travel, while so many pressing needs are
not being met at home.
When Canada
and the United States are about to have
an election, their political leaders are
not able to negotiate in good faith with
other heads of government until the
elections have taken place. So the
Opposition questions what can be gained
by these official visits, other than
getting a photograph with President
Bush?
The
Opposition also reminds the government
that there are many outstanding debts
such as the school books taken from
local retail stores that have not been
paid for yet. Many of these small
businesses borrowed money to purchase
their inventory and are suffering
financially as a result. The Opposition
also points out that while the
government makes false claims about
missing files; the missing government is
real and can be seen by the people.
It is up to
the government to live up to their
promises to the people to be a
responsible and accountable government,
by justifying the need for the excessive
travel and associated expenses before
another bill goes unpaid.
