St. Georges, October 9th,
2008:
The New
National Party is concerned that if the
trend continues where investors and
individuals involved in securing
investment opportunities for Grenadians
continues, the political and economic
situation in Grenada will worsen.
The Party
believes there will be far reaching
negative economic repercussions
following the recent articles published
in the Grenada Today Newspaper. In
particular, the article written by local
lawyer and member of the Prime
Minister’s Oversight Committee, Lloyd
Noel, accused the Keith Mitchell
Administration of being part of a
corrupt deal, which has proven to be
totally legitimate by the Attorney
General.
While Mr.
Noel has published an apology, the party
believes that this is not an indication
that there will be a change in the
libeling trend that continues to the
detriment of the people of Grenada,
Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
According
to Mr Noel, his libelous statements were
not intended to damage anyone and that
he was simply trying to keep the public
informed. However, the party believes
that anyone taking on the important task
of keeping the public informed must
first be responsible enough to do proper
research, and to ensure that they are
informing the public of fact, not
fiction.
Most
importantly, the information must not be
damaging to others, particularly when it
is not true. The party believes that
anything short of this can be considered
a deliberate act to mislead the public
and can do more harm than good. The
party also notes that Mr. Noel failed to
apologise to the Governor General or the
former Prime Minister despite
positioning his apology as an ‘innocent
mistake’. Dr. Mitchell has said that he
will be taking legal action against all
parties concerned since the article was
libelous and damaging to himself and the
people of Grenada.
