The Obsession

Dear Editor,

I will be grateful for a small space in your paper to publish my view of what I consider to be an unfortunate situation.  Like many, I find it difficult to understand why some members and supporters of the NDC are so obsessed with the former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.

I listened to the election campaign and it was said by supporters of the NDC that he could not go to the United States because the FBI wanted him.  When he lost the election and wanted to travel to the USA on business then the Government will not give him his passport with his American Visa to travel. He eventually obtained a visa and traveled to the USA then the Grenada Today said he ran away so he won’t have to attend court.  He gets to New York and coincidentally he is there at the same time the Prime Minister and a delegation is visiting their NDC supporters on the talk shop says he is following Prime Minister Thomas. If this is not obsession then it must be a fixation if it is not a fixation then it has to be an addiction - same thing.

Then there is the big charade by certain persons in the media that Keith Mitchell thinks he is still Prime Minister, one journalist said that his Hi5 page is still saying ’PM’ (note that it does not even say Prime Minister just PM which can mean a million things) and that becomes ‘headline news’.

Then a slip of the tongue may have occurred and Dr. Mitchell was referred to as Prime Minister, This again became an issue and they said that he is encouraging people to call him Prime Minister.  I believe this will no longer be an issue now since Hon Tillman Thomas himself, referred to Dr. Keith Mitchell as Prime Minister on two occasions in the last sitting of Parliament.

Then, there was all this talk about arrest. We were made to believe that if NDC won the election they will arrest Dr. Mitchell on the 9th of July.  Some persons got very dramatic and described how he will be hung in the Market Square because all the evidence of corruption was available.

When the NDC supporters started asking questions on the 9th of July then the harassment and victimization of a number of key supporters of the NNP started as if to indicate don’t worry we are saving the best (Keith Mitchell) for last.  Then when the region started to take note after the Wildman scenario, Anslem Clouden and George Worme decided to team up and make good use of the word “arrest”, saying that the magistrate will issue a bench warrant to arrest Keith Mitchell.  Well the man on the ground who does not understand the court system just needs to hear the word arrest and will think that Dr. Mitchell was found guilty of corruption.  The man on the ground will not understand that they were talking about a case where Mitchell was taking George Worme to court.

When the George Worme/Anslem Clouden strategy failed, then Max Sterling (who many believe to be Eddie Frederick) wrote an article advising the Attorney General that he should take his time and investigate all possible cases he could find against Keith Mitchell before arresting him.  This can only mean that there is no case. His exact words were ‘…take all the time you need”.  Well tell me who is fooling who when that same individual always claimed to have evidence of corruption against Dr. Mitchell?

My problem is that a lot of time is wasted on one individual when there are over a hundred thousand of Grenadians left.  The majority of them are finding it difficult to find food to put on their table or to even pay their way to work (the few that still have a job).  The economic situation in the country is at its worst and will worsen.  How long will it be before those in authority and those who advise them see that.  Hopefully they are interested in the poor and suffering people of this country and will begin to act that way.

My advice is, leave Dr. Keith Mitchell alone and let us focus on continuing the progress under the congress.  We already throw Jonah overboard let the boat sail on hopefully to a port of success.
