Dr. Keith Mitchell |
St.
Georges, November 18th, 2008:
Members of the Opposition
says that there can be no explanation to
justify the Government’s excessive
spending while the poor and vulnerable
are denied basic support services which
they received before and deserve.
While the Minister for
Finance Hon. Nazim Burke reported to the
Parliament that over three hundred
thousand dollars was spent on furniture
for various ministries and departments,
and the Prime Minister reported that
over 30 thousand dollars was spent on
one trip, in which he took a delegation
with him; thousands of Grenadians are
unable to purchase basic food item.
Members of the Opposition
say that this kind of spending is
unacceptable and does not reflect a
country where the economy is a mess and
the treasury is empty as the Minister
declared.
Opposition leader Dr. the
Rt Hon. Keith Mitchell says it is
unfortunate that the Government would
take a decision to spend three hundred
thousand dollars on furniture and at the
same time announced that it will reduce
the pay of road workers. He said while
the Government spends recklessly persons
are dying because the government refuses
to assist them to do dialysis on a
weekly basis.
Dr. Mitchell again calls
on the Government to take a closer look
at its spending and to think about the
poor whenever decisions are taken to
spend on things that are not absolutely
necessary.
