Gregory Bowen makes appeal to the Minister for Communications & Works

Gregory Bowen

St. Georges, November 5th, 2008: Shadow Cabinet Minister for Communication and Works Mr. Gregory Bowen is calling on the new administration to review their decision to reduce the pay for persons involved in the debushing programme.

According to Bowen, the past Government realizing the economic challenges faced by Grenadians had provided increases not only to public servants and agricultural workers but also to road workers.  He said this increase was condemned by the new Minister for Works saying that the decision by the NNP administration was for political benefits.

However, Bowen says that the statements of the Minister have been consistent with a ‘don’t care’ attitude for the poor since he has made similar statements regarding other workers who received increased pay under the NNP.  He said the opposition questions why the Government is always pressuring the most vulnerable to make sacrifices. Mr. Bowen also notes that the new Government was quick to condemn the decision by the past government to increase the spending on the debushing programme, and explained that all these were measures taken by his administration to help the poor and vulnerable to deal with the rising cost of living.

The former Minister for Communications and works calls on the new Government in these tough economic times to reconsider its decision and to return to the previous rate paid to the road workers.
