Wednesday 23rd July 2008, St. George's:
Leader of Grenada's Opposition Dr. the
Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell met a
seven-member delegation from the
People's Republic of China today. The
delegation paid a courtesy call on Dr.
Mitchell, at his Happy Hill residence.
The delegation included Chinese Special
Envoy Ambassador, Zhao Zhenyu, Chinese
Resident Ambassador to Grenada Zhang Wan
Hai, Director of Foreign Ministry, Cai
Wei and Foreign Ministry Staff Member
Yi Yuanging. The delegation brought
special greetings and wishes from the
People's Republic of China and wished
Dr. Mitchell and his party well.
The Leader
of the Opposition thanked the Ambassador
and his delegation for their visit and
pledged that he would do all in his
power to ensure that excellent relations
are maintained between Grenada and
China. Dr. Mitchell also took the
opportunity to outline the importance of
continuing the projects which were
negotiated under his Government. He said
it was necessary that these projects be
continued for the benefit of the people
of Grenada.
The
Opposition Leader mentioned that his
only regret with the Chinese
relationship is not having the second
part of the Stadium complete already and
the slow pace of the housing program.
He said, "These projects are extremely
important for our people. It is my hope
that they can be started and completed
very soon." Dr. Mitchell also called on
the Chinese Officials to hold talks with
Taiwan as soon as possible to relieve
Grenada of debts owed. Dr Mitchell said
he had already made this request as
Prime Minister and noted that the
Chinese Government promised to deal with
this request after the election. He told
the team that he would continue to make
this call as Opposition Leader as this
debt relief was an important agenda item
for Grenada.
Ambassador
Zhenyu listened to Dr. Mitchell's
requests and promised to take his
concerns back to China. He said that
Dr. Mitchell had a major role to play as
an elder statesman and commended him for
the leading role he played in
normalizing relations with China |
